The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in April distributed more than $1 billion to individual states to fund increased outdoor access and wildlife habitat conservation.

The money was generated through excise taxes on hunting, shooting, fishing equipment and boat fuel and authorized through the Wildlife Restoration Act and Sport Fish Restoration Act, federal legislation that supports critical state conservation and outdoor recreation projects.

“For many decades funds generated by these programs have consistently supported millions of acres and miles of outdoor recreation access and wildlife habitat in this country,” said Margaret Everson, principal deputy director of FWS. “Thanks to industry, states and hunters, shooters, anglers and boaters, America’s wildlife and natural resources and the opportunities they provide will be available for generations to come.”

FWS has distributed more than $21 billion in support of state conservation and recreation projects, about a third of which has been matched by state wildlife agencies.
